Why the connection is needed

A new network to strengthen grid capacity and tackle the climate emergency.
Tackling the climate emergency, connecting new renewable developments, expanding businesses and supporting the electrification of our heating and transport systems will require more grid capacity.
These are challenges that Wales faces, ones that need to be tackled urgently and ones that Green GEN Cymru are trying to help address.
There is an abundance of clean, renewable energy in Wales, particularly from the wind that blows across our hills and mountains. New energy parks are proposed in Wales, but the existing electricity network does not have the required capacity to connect them.
As an Independent Distribution Network Operator, Green GEN Cymru’s role is to provide a connection for energy generators and users.
Without a connection, the renewable energy provided by these proposed energy parks could not be made available to communities and businesses, both locally and nationally.
If we do not upgrade the existing electricity network quickly, we risk missing renewable energy targets and failing to address the climate emergency. The Towy Teifi project could play an important role in addressing these concerns by delivering clean, renewable energy from where it is generated to the communities and businesses who need it.
Adding needed grid capacity means:

"We are committed to tackling climate change and acknowledge that we have a significant role to play in both further reducing our own greenhouse gas emissions and providing the leadership to encourage residents, businesses and other organisations to take action"
Carmarthenshire County Council – Net Zero Action Plan.
"As the global energy crisis deepens, domestic energy costs skyrocket, and the ticking of the climate catastrophe time bomb becomes ever more deafening, the case for rapid acceleration in renewable energy development has never been stronger."
Welsh Government - Renewable Energy in Wales
"The climate emergency needs to be responded to at every level. In Ceredigion we need to respond at a county-wide level and as such organisations and individuals from across the county need to come together to find solutions and ensure substantial change happens quickly."
Ceredigion County Council – Achieving Net Zero by 2030.
"Transitioning to a modern, place-based decarbonised energy system that is fit for the twenty-first century poses significant challenges, but it also has the potential to bring great benefit, both for the environment and for economic and social wellbeing of our communities."
